American Literature

American Literature covers any work produced in literary form by an American author and its themes cover many genres. Thus, it is difficult to pinpoint one specific novel or text that represents this genre. From the past, the later examples of American Literature covered topics, such as relating to the Deep South, racism or the American Dream, as they were issues present in the society at that time. However, as the time changes; the setting changes, or the characters changes, the themes undoubtedly are also altered.

American Literature started around 1630s and gradually gained popularity and has made a prominent mark on the history of literature. Some famous texts include: The Great Gatsby, Gone with the Wind, To Kill a Mockingbird, Huckleberry Finn and Death of a Salesman.

On this website, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ and ‘Death of a Salesman’ have been analysed due to their popularity amongst American Literature and their depth into the themes and issues present in those societies at that time. Although they are both part of the same broad genre, the plots were different and focused on very different issues in the 1900s.
